Emergency Communications Centers

SCALABLE UPGRADES FOR MISSION-CRITICAL OPERATIONS

Objective

Responsible for Police, Fire, and EMS Dispatch, 911 Communications Centers are among the most mission-critical facilities. Failure in power, cooling, fire suppression, or communications infrastructure can have life-or-death consequences. It is essential to take a comprehensive approach to secure the dispatch center and ensure redundancy across the entire communications chain—from radio rooms to transmission towers.

As technology advances and radio communications, telecommunications, and data systems converge, a data center-level approach to resilience is now required for infrastructure. A robust and redundant topology—including dual UPS systems, N+1 cooling, multiple generators, and diverse communication pathways—ensures uninterrupted operations even in the face of failures or external threats.

Solution

Seeking an upgrade from the old “DC” battery systems to the newer “AC” UPS-powered systems, the natural progression was to install a backup or redundant cooling system, and then considering redundant UPS systems, generators, and so forth to add multiple levels of backup. However, as the project evolved, a more comprehensive redundancy strategy was implemented:

  • Dual UPS systems on independent generators to mitigate risk
  • Redundant cooling systems powered by separate power sources
  • Scalable upgrades extending to multiple transmission tower sites

Result

Executed in strategic phases, the project met all design objectives while maintaining uninterrupted emergency operations. Attention to detail was paramount so multiple ‘tower sites’ were introduced to review and recommend upgrades. This meticulous approach to infrastructure planning ensures that 911 Communications Centers remain resilient, prepared, and operational—no matter the circumstances.

Final results, all targets met and the project completed without incident – thankfully. Mission-critical operations demand mission-critical solutions. If your facility requires a resilient, scalable infrastructure strategy, let’s talk.
